Contrary to popular belief, fear is not an effective tool for leadership. In fact, it can actually be damaging and destructive to both the leader and their team. Great leaders don’t instill fear in their people in order to get their attention or create a sense of order. Instead, they lead, influence, inspire, and motivate through hope. They unite their team through meaning and purpose, and make sure everyone feels like they belong. They show respect, gratitude, and appreciation, and prioritize empathy, compassion, humility, and vulnerability in their interactions with others. These qualities build trust and foster a high level of psychological safety within the team.
